Solar Photovoltaic Systems
Solar Photovoltaic Systems generate clean, safe and in our climate relatively reliable electricity.
They operate silently and without any moving parts or environmental emissions (other than those required to manufacture all the components and transport to site). They consist of an arrangement of several components, including solar panels to absorb and convert sunlight into electricity, a solar inverter to change the electric current from DC to AC.
A rooftop system for a new home recoups the invested energy for its manufacturing plus the cost of supply and installation anywhere from 12 months to 4 years, depending on the size of the system and the energy used by the householder and produces about 95% of net renewable energy over a 30-year service life.
Driven by advances in technology and increases in manufacturing scale and sophistication, the cost of solar systems is declining continuously. There are several million PV systems distributed all over the world, at this stage mostly in Europe and now more recently China. We here in Australia and especially in Queensland are in a prime position to access so much more solar power with our abundance of sunshine, hence the Sunshine State.
It's not difficult to understand or calculate the financial gains to be made by investing in your own power supply, even you place little or no emphasis or even believe in global warming, the financial benefits are very clear.
Admittedly some solar systems that have been fitted over recent years don't look particularly attractive, especially as some seem to be awkwardly placed on a hip and valley roof. Yet even these systems are at least saving if not making money for their residents.
At the design stage, we can consider the position of the panels for maximum effect, so as to be seen to fit into place, especially on a solar passively designed building and roof. Some suppliers of roof tiles here in Australia, Monieer Roof Tiles now make an integrated solar panel in the shape of a roof tile and in a matching colour, designed to blend into the roof and improve ascetic appeal. Also in Europe they have integrated panels that are fitted in lieu of roofing sheeting, they are a complete roofing system that is waterproof and appear as a comparable roof profile.
While these integrated panels are probably best suited in the colder climates in Australia because the of these panels in usually quite dark in colour which naturally absorbs heat into the roof area. Here in Queensland, it is preferable to be selecting lighter roof colours, so as to better reflect sunshine and not absorb unwanted heat into the roof space during the summer months. With this is mind we again can design the roof and place the solar panels so as to not detract from the aesthetic appeal of your home, even to the point of barely being noticeable with low pitched verandah roofs.
Another game changer has been the recent introduction of efficient battery storage systems that can be connected to your solar photovoltaic system, which will provide even more independence and possibly enable you to live off the grid. One thing about our Sun it is a never-ending source of power, that will endure long after coal, oil and gas have been totally depleted and proving to be very expensive both financially and its detrimental effects on our ecosystem and the entire planet. Solar and battery is a secure way forward. Forecasts show solar will surpass coal-generated electricity worldwide by 2026 and the gap will continue to widen.
